Alistair Guthrie was born a while ago in Taranaki New Zealand under the mountain & next to the mighty west coast,a place of great spirit, light & surf.
His life in photography started from an early age as his father was a commercial photographer with a large studio & darkrooms in the town he grew up in. Alistair would work at the studio after school & in between surfs where he learnt how to craft prints both b&w & colour, set up lights & watch how the magic happened.
It wasn’t long before Alistair was trusted to shoot the odd wedding reception, which was a fantastic learning experience to say the least, interacting with people, putting them at ease while he attempted to make them look good with a mouth full of peas & more often than not a skinfull of the happy juice.
Alistair realised how the camera was a conduit to recording how he saw life, the landscape & the folk around him and was soon availing himself to the access of the darkrooms for his own work.
The transition to commercial work happened after a few years of photographic education, travel & assisting, always with the black box at his side. Those early influences continued to shape how he approach both the commercial & his own work. A sense of reality & design is important even with the help of the ever present post production.
This is the point of difference. Alistair vows to continue carrying the passion to capture his journey through life with this medium & through this, it influences his approach to what he can bring to his commercial work.
Alistair has worked for all the major & not so major advertising & design agencies here in New Zealand, Australia & Asia.
He still continues to pursue personal projects and have exhibited in many small & big shows, been represented by a dealer gallery, not to mention, picked up a few awards along the way.
